'Grey Rock' on the Buffalo River

Description

"Grey Rock" is a prominent landmark on the Buffalo River in Arkansas, especially for white water canoeing enthusiasts.

"Grey Rock" is located on the headwaters of the Buffalo River. This photo was taken before it became a national park. The scene is upstream a short distance from the Camp Orr Boy Scout camp.

Camping on the banks of the Buffalo with J.D. Mullin, fellow member of the National Speleological Society, in 1976. The spot we chose for our campfire and tent was on the river bank, immediately left of this view. We came from Tulsa that weekend, with my vehicle loaded with over 300 feet of rappelling rope, to search for a reported pit cave, with a sheer drop of 160 feet into the entrance.

Our access to this point was via my new 1975 Toyota Landcruiser 4-wheel drive, bumping over a Jeep trail down 1,300 feet from the top of the mountain. We came in off the then gravel road across the top of the mountains, between Ponca and Jasper.

Photographing this scene is no longer possible, due to the big oak trees washed away by later floods on the river.

Photo taken with my Hasselblad 500C camera, using an 80mm Zeiss Distagon lens and 120 Kodak film.
